How Does PCR Molecular Testing Detect COVID-19?
Testing is performed by taking a swab of the nasal cavity (called a nasopharyngeal swab test), which is quick and painless. In most cases, results will be available within one or two business days. This test is used to diagnose COVID-19. Get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms (see below), or if you have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
COVID-19 symptoms may include, but are not limited to:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Difficulty breathing
- Tiredness (fatigue)
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- Loss of taste or smell
- Stomach symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
COVID-19 symptoms may differ for everyone. This list does not include all possible symptoms.
How exactly is the sample collected?
A healthcare provider uses a swab to collect respiratory material found in your nasal cavity. A swab is a soft cotton tip on a long, flexible stick. There are different kinds of nose swabs – including nasal swabs that collect a sample in the lower part of your nostrils, and nasopharyngeal swabs that reach further up into the nasal cavity.
COVID-19 Negative (SARS-CoV-2 RNA Not Detected) Test Result
If your COVID-19 test is negative, this means that the test did not detect the presence of COVID-19 in your nasal secretions. This result suggests that you are not currently infected with COVID-19. However, even if you test negative, we still recommend wearing a face mask in public and following social distancing recommendations.
